Adrian Orange is a very spirited young man who has released many records through many different labels. For a while he performed under the name “Thanksgiving,” then, in 2006, it was “Adrian Orange.” In 2007, it was “Adrian Orange and Her Band.” Most recently, he has settled into the name “Ajo.”
This interview was conducted, via email, on November 14th, 2006.
Q: Do you have any really disagreeable tour stories?
A: My van was stolen right before this tour. Mostly, I have been lucky. I’ve had a lot of records stolen at shows, and some stuff stolen out of my old truck once. Nothing really horrible.
Q: Do you have a favorite song of yours? That’s kind of a dumb question.
A: I go back and forthwith which ones I like and liking any of them. I usually like the new ones best, immediately after making them up at least.
Q: When my mother saw that one of your records, now available through Marriage Records, is titled “(Censored by the San Marin Administration) the World” she said that she needs to start monitoring what I listen to. What do you have to say to her?
A: Why?
Q: Do you read good books and things?
A: Yeah. I read a story by Pushkin called “The Queen of Spades.” It was really good. I bought a bunch of books recently that I am excited to get in to. They are all Dover thrift editions of Nietzsche, Voltaire, Pushkin’s short stories, and then I got this other weird book about socialism for free from my friend in Wilkes Barr, Pennsylvania who is really good at fixing stuff.
Q: I just watched Home Alone 2 and I remembered that on your record “Welcome Nowhere” you have a song called Home Alone Parts 1 and 2. What do you think of Kevin McCallister’s parent’s negligence? Do you have plans to make a song called Home Alone Parts 3 and 4? If so, will this be a DVD only release?
A: Yes, definitely. There will be a collection of bloopers serving as the main feature. I think his dad is a d***, of course, but his mom seemed well-intentioned, but overworked and stressed out. Maybe if they had a smaller house, they wouldn’t lose each other so easily.
Q: Thank you!
A: Thank you.
Phil Elverum, also a young man, has also released many records through his own company, P.W. Elverum and Sun, and through K Records. He performed under the name “The Microphones” for a while, though now he is known as “Mount Eerie.”
This interview was conducted sometime in April, 2007.
Q: I’m going to say two words, and you will say the first four words you think of. Soda Pie.
A: Why…are…you…this.
Q: Which death rocked you harder, Saddam Hussein’s or Anna Nicole’s?
A: Saddam.
